An eminent geologist with over 35 years experience in stratigraphy and sedimentology, over half of it applied to the hydrocarbon industry. He brings to hydrocarbon-related problems a deep and wide experience of a global range of clastic depositional environments, stratigraphic ages and geographic locations. For the past 13 years he has applied this experience as a consultant to hydrocarbon-related problems in the North Sea and worldwide.

He is a particular authority on the Carboniferous of the Southern North Sea having a uniquely extensive experience through regional multi-client studies, field studies and single well studies.

Wide and deep understanding of clastic depositional settings generally, based on extensive field and subsurface experience with publications in the areas of fluvial, deltaic, aeolian, glacial and deep-water deposition.

Author and editor of multi-client and proprietary reports; Editor of “Sedimentology” and of multi-author volumes (“Correlation in Hydrocarbon Exploration”, NPF, 1989; “Modern and Ancient Fluvial Systems”, IAS, 1983). Author of numerous papers and major textbooks (“Sedimentary Environments and Facies”, 3 editions; “Sedimentary Structures”; 2 editions).

Presenter of highly regarded courses to industry, in the field, laboratory and in the lecture room. Courses have been given to single companies, to licence groups and as open courses (Sedimentary Research Associates; J.A.P.E.C. Course in Deep-water Depositional Environments).
